Let pigment create its own visual magic with the Granulating Power Watercolor Stick Set by Daniel Smith. Selected by artist Rajat Subhra Bandopadhyay, the palette combines four mineral-based PrimaTek colours with the dramatically granulating Lunar Black. Greens, blues, earthy reds, mineral greys and deep black create natural texture, sediment and complex mixtures for landscapes, rocks, trees, weathered buildings and atmospheric urban sketches.

Granulating Power is designed for artists who love watercolour when it refuses to remain flat and predictable. Larger pigment particles settle into the texture of the paper, creating natural shifts, speckles, sediment and broken passages reminiscent of stone, soil, moss, weathered walls and clouds. Each wash develops its own movement and may continue to transform as it dries.

The four PrimaTek colours are made from natural minerals, and each behaves in a distinctly different way. Serpentine Genuine shifts from luminous yellow-green to darker granulating spots, Sodalite Genuine moves between soft blue-grey and deep near-black blue, Piemontite Genuine produces warm red-browns with violet and earthy variation, while Hematite Genuine leaves iron-rich grey and brown sediment. Lunar Black completes the palette with one of Daniel Smith’s most dramatic granulating effects.

The mixtures are just as expressive as the individual colours. Serpentine with Piemontite creates muted olives and natural earthy greens for woodland and dry foliage. Hematite with Sodalite produces stormy slate greys for stone, roads, roofs and heavy skies, while a small amount of Lunar Black cools and deepens almost any mixture. It is a compact palette with remarkable range for paintings that need depth, atmosphere and a strong sense of material texture.

  • Sodalite Genuine: a deep mineral blue that dilutes to soft blue-grey while leaving darker sediment in the paper texture. Ideal for night skies, distant mountains, stone, shadows and atmospheric neutrals.
  • Lunar Black: a transparent black with extremely powerful granulation. Its pigment gathers into dramatic textured marks, adding character to rocks, roads, walls, clouds and deep shadows without creating a flat black area.
  • Piemontite Genuine: a complex earthy red PrimaTek with brown, burgundy and violet shifts. Beautiful for rust, autumn landscapes, tree trunks, roof tiles, rocky surfaces and warm shadow.
  • Hematite Genuine: a mineral grey-brown made from genuine hematite, with distinctive iron-like sediment and strong granulating behaviour. Excellent for stone, soil, walls, bark, aged metal and architectural detail.

👍 Ideal for:

Watercolour painting, granulation techniques, landscapes, mountains, rocks, forests, urban sketching, weathered buildings, architecture, night skies, stormy atmospheres, autumn subjects, nature journals, plein-air painting, travel journals, mixed media, natural texture and expressive mark-making.

✨ Inspiration Tip:

Work on cold-pressed or rough paper to maximise the granulation. Begin with Sodalite Genuine in the sky and allow it to merge with a little Lunar Black for clouds and distant shadow. Use Hematite Genuine and Piemontite Genuine across rocks, walls and roofs, then introduce Serpentine Genuine for moss and foliage. Avoid overmixing; use generous water and allow the pigment particles to settle naturally as the wash dries.
