Work the stump gently over pigment or graphite using small circular movements or strokes that follow the direction of the shading. Hard lines become softer, neighbouring tones merge and the transition from light to dark appears more natural.
Use them with coloured pencils and pastels, as well as graphite, charcoal and chalk pencils. They are especially useful for portraits, folds, backgrounds and smaller areas where you need control without transferring natural oils from your fingers onto the paper.
As pigment builds up on the tip, clean and reshape it by gently rubbing it against fine sandpaper or a sanding block. Keep one stump for lighter values and the second for dark or coloured areas to reduce unwanted colour transfer.
