Smooth shading and natural tonal transitions do not always require more pencils; sometimes they simply need the right blending tool. The Pro Art No. 2 Blending Paper Stumps are made from tightly wound, soft grey paper and are designed to move and blend dry media in a controlled way.
Gently work the stump over graphite, charcoal or pastel using small circular movements or strokes that follow the direction of your shading. The pigment spreads more evenly, harsh marks become softer and separate tones merge without transferring natural oils from your fingers onto the paper.
The pointed ends provide control in smaller areas such as eyes, folds, hair and detailed shadows. Hold the stump at an angle to use more of its side when blending larger areas or creating broader, softer transitions.
As pigment builds up on the tip, clean and reshape it by gently rubbing it against fine sandpaper or a sanding block. Keeping separate stumps for dark, light and coloured media also helps prevent unwanted colour transfer between different areas of your drawing.
