You often ask us about the best way to clean your brushes. The truth is, with so many different types of brushes and techniques out there, it can get a bit confusing.
The main thing to remember is that you should clean your brushes according to the type of paint you're using. Water-based paints like watercolor and acrylics are different from oil paints.
- The most important point: always clean your brushes immediately after use. Don’t skip this step, as it’s key to keeping your brushes in good shape for longer.
- It’s also a good idea to have separate brushes for different mediums. For example, don’t use the same brushes for watercolor and oil paints.
- When you're working, keep your brushes moist.
- But when you’re not painting, avoid leaving your brushes soaking in water. This can gradually damage the bristles and the handle.
- Once your brushes are clean and dry, you can store them however you like, but the best way is either flat or hanging with the bristles downward.
1. How to clean your brushes when using water-based paints
Water-based paints are the easiest on brushes. To clean them:
Firstly, wipe off excess paint with a cloth.
Then wash the brushes with a pH-neutral soap or natural ingredients and warm water.
Put a little soap in your hand and gently work it into the bristles, then rinse until the water runs clear.
2. How to clean your brushes when using oil paints
Next, clean the brushes with soap and water. If needed, you can also use a little turpentine. Be careful, though, not to leave the brushes soaking in the solvent for too long, as this can damage the bristles.
Let them dry flat or hanging with the bristles downward.
