Discover the cyanotype magic and fall in love!

Cyanotype is the "original" sun printing process, one of the earliest photographic techniques. An image is created when a chemical solution reacts to sunlight and turns blue, resulting in a picture made from the blue and white color base.

One of the key advantages of cyanotypes today is the flexibility they offer. Since you apply the chemicals yourself to the desired surface, you can easily print in large or small sizes, on fabric, wood, and whatever inspires your artistic alter ego!

To get started, you'll need a kit - containing these two chemicals and of course sunlight! This method is relatively easy and ideal, even for children!

Jacquard and PAR DIY offer high-quality products that make cyanotype accessible and easy for every artist, whether you are a beginner or a pro in this technique.

These kits include everything you need to create unique works on fabric but also on paper.

Basic Steps

  • Surface Preparation: Choose the material you want to use, such as paper or fabric, and ensure it is clean and dry.
  • Solution Preparation: Mix the chemicals according to the kit instructions.
  • Applying the Cyanotype Solution: Apply the solution to your material using a brush or sponge and let it dry in a dark place. Brushes tend to leave strokes on paper (which can be desirable or not), while fabric tends to absorb the chemical more evenly. Be careful during application to avoid oversaturation, which can complicate rinsing later. Once satisfied with the coverage (the substrate should have a light yellow-green tint), place the damp paper in a dark closet to dry.
  • Image Placement: Place the film or object you want to imprint on your material and expose it to sunlight or a UV lamp.
  • Rinsing and Drying: After exposure, rinse the material with water to reveal the image and let it dry.
