🎨 How Much Fabric Can One Bottle Dye?
One bottle of Rit Liquid Dye (236 ml / 8 oz) can dye approximately two pounds (about 1 kg) of dry fabric.
This is roughly equivalent to:
- four large adult T-shirts
- a pair of jeans
- several small garments
👉 If you want a darker or more intense color, you can use double the amount of dye.
🧂 Don’t Forget the Salt or Vinegar
For best results in the dye bath, add:
One cup of salt for:
One cup of white vinegar for:
👉 These help the dye bond better with the fibers and improve color absorption.
🤍 Start with the Lightest Fabric Possible
If the fabric is white or off-white, you will achieve the true color of the dye.
If the fabric already has color:
- the dye works as an overdye
- the new color mixes with the existing one
👉 Example:
yellow fabric + blue dye → green result
🎨 Colors Can Be Mixed
One of the biggest advantages of Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye is that the colors can be mixed together, allowing you to create almost unlimited custom shades.
You can:
- create intermediate tones
- lighten or darken a shade
- mix custom colors for specific projects
For example:
- Yellow + Blue → Green
- Red + Blue → Purple
- Red + Yellow → Orange
By mixing different amounts of dye you can create unique custom colors, perfect for textile design, DIY fashion and fabric dyeing projects.
🧪 Powder vs Liquid Dye
Both Rit Powder Dye and Rit Liquid Dye produce the same color results.
The main difference is that:
- Liquid dye is already dissolved and ready to use
- Powder dye is more concentrated and must be dissolved in hot water first
Liquid dye is often preferred for easy mixing and smooth color distribution.
☀️ Bleach Stains or Sun Damage
Bleach and sun exposure can damage fabric fibers, which may cause dye to absorb unevenly.
You can try using Rit Color Remover first, but results may vary.
🎨 What Happens with Prints and Designs?
Fabric dye does not cover prints like paint.
If a garment has a design:
- the design will change color
- the new color will be a mix of the original color and the dye
Example:
white shirt with a pink print + blue dye → purple print
🧵 Garments with Polyester or Nylon Thread
Many garments contain:
- polyester stitching
- nylon threads
Because Rit All-Purpose Dye primarily dyes natural fibers, synthetic threads may remain lighter in color.
👉 To dye synthetic fibers as well, use Rit DyeMore for Synthetics.
In some cases Rit All-Purpose Dye and Rit DyeMore can be used together in the same dye bath to dye both natural and synthetic fibers.
🧺 How to Make the Color Last Longer
For better wash durability:
- rinse the fabric thoroughly after dyeing
- wash with mild detergent
- use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative
👉 This helps set the dye and reduce fading.
🔄 I Want to Completely Change the Color
If you want to:
- dye a dark fabric into a lighter color
- completely change the existing color
you can first use Rit Color Remover to remove or lighten the original color.
⚠️ Full color removal cannot always be guaranteed.
