Today’s topic, at SnP, will be “liquid glass” or as it is well-known resin.
Liquid glass is the established trade term for two-component epoxy resin (resin + catalyst-hardener),
which, after its solidification, acquires an appearance and texture, that resembles that of glass, on whatever surface it is applied.
At SnP you will find Artist Grade Clear ArtResin, UV resin that dries very quickly when exposed to UV light or the sun, and AmazinCast (in white), ideal for casting, and ready to paint.
Here, we should also note that ArtResin is also suitable for making household items and food molds (always following the instructions for use).
Liquid glass can be used in many ways and can be applied in two ways:
-By casting in molds, where we can encase all kinds of decorative elements at the same time.
In this case, you should keep in mind that any type of material-object that is to be encased in crafts with liquid glass, e.g. flowers, sand, shells, paper, photos, metal-wooden elements, glitter, beads, etc. must be absolutely dry, not having even the slightest trace of moisture or dust.
-By coating objects-surfaces, such as tables, metal trays, clay bowls, glass and many others. Here, the resin can also act as a varnish.
Basic process
Whatever you decide to create, keep in mind that since this is a chemical product, it is essential to wear gloves. Also, it's a good idea to protect your desktop. However, even if your surface gets dirty while the resin is still wet, you can clean it with acetone or alcohol. On the other hand, if it dries and hardens, then you will need some solvent and sandpaper to remove it.
To create liquid glass, you need two components mixed in disposable utensils or plastic measuring cups with a small wooden or plastic spatula, which is also used to "layer" the material during crafting.
Of course, you can color the resin, as well! It needs a minimal amount of color, either in liquid form, with alcohol inks and art resin tints, or in powder form, with pigments! Pour drops of color or an equivalent amount of powder into the prepared liquid glass mixture and mix very well until it is completely incorporated into the mixture.
Then, and while the liquid glass is still fluid, you can create patterns with the colored mixtures using your spatula, toothpick, etc., depending on the size of the object.
Finally, depending on the size of the object, the hardening time varies. However, hardening time for small-medium simple crafts ranges from 1-2 up to 48 hours. Always remember to let your craft harden in a flat and dust-free surface!
So, that was an introduction to our favorite resin! I'm sure that once you try it, you'll be addicted, because the possibilities are endless!
Until next time,
Keep on creating!
