The Aitoh Sumi-E Sketch Pad includes 48 sheets of Japanese Hosho / washi paper in a large 12" x 18" format. Made in Japan, it is designed mainly for Sumi-E, calligraphy and diluted ink techniques (lavis), where brush movement, water control and ink intensity are an important part of the final result.
The paper is thin and lightweight, but still strong. It has a natural, soft texture and a slight translucency, making it useful not only for painting and calligraphy, but also for more experimental paper craft and mixed media work. Use it with inks, diluted paints, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, stamps and collage techniques.
You can stamp it, paint it, tear it by hand and add it to art journal pages, cards, tags, junk journals and mixed media compositions. Its slight translucency makes it ideal for delicate overlays and collage work, helping the pieces blend into the background without making the composition feel heavy.
It is also suitable for printing and printmaking techniques such as linocut, woodblock printing and monotype, especially when you want a thin paper that takes impressions well and gives a more natural, handmade feel.
Thanks to its translucency and natural texture, it can also be used for decorative light projects such as small paper lanterns, illuminated panels, decorative window panels and paper screens inspired by shoji. For these applications, use only low-heat LED lighting and keep the paper away from flames or heat sources.
