The Aitoh Paper Nook Book Kit is inspired by the traditional Chinese Zhen Xian Bao, also known as a Chinese Thread Book, with roots in the folk tradition of ancient China. Originating in Northern China, the Thread Book or Zhen Xian Bao is a distinctive type of handmade book created to store small, precious everyday items: threads, needles, embroidery patterns, fabric samples, notes and personal keepsakes. Traditionally made from printed cotton, it featured many interconnected compartments that opened one after another and folded flat again, so the book could be stored easily in the large pockets of women’s clothing.
The construction is based on paper folding, with an origami-style logic, and does not require glue, scissors or additional tools. You follow the steps, fold the papers and gradually see the compartments and the structure of the book take shape. It is a project that is enjoyable both in the making and in the finished result, especially for makers who love paper, traditional craft forms, origami, bookmaking and small handmade objects.
The kit includes 15 paper pieces made from Japanese Yuzenshi and Nepal Lokta, cut to the correct sizes for the project, along with instructions and a video link.
