So let's have a look at the basics!
- The most important thing to remember is that brushes should be washed as soon as you finish using them. Don't neglect this, it is the most important step to keep your brushes for a longer period.
- Also, we suggest you have special brushes for each technique. For example, do not use watercolor brushes with oil paints.
- When you paint, you must keep your brushes wet.
- But when you are not working, do not keep your brushes in water. This will gradually destroy their hair as well as their grip.
- As long as they are clean and dry, we can store them however we want. However, the best way is to place them in a horizontal position or hang them with the hairs down.
1. How to clean your brushes when using watercolors
Water-based colors are the least harmful to our brushes. To clean them, first remove the excess paint with a cloth. Then we wash them with soap with a neutral ph, or with natural ingredients, and warm water. Apply some soap to your hand and scrub until the rinse water runs clear.
2. How to clean your brushes when using oil paints
Start by removing as much paint as you can with newspaper or kitchen tissue, always following the direction of the hairs. Then clean them with soap and water but, if necessary, you can also use a little turpentine. Be careful though, don't leave your brushes in solvent for too long because the bristles will be damaged.
At SnP, we have the amazing DecoArt Media Brush & Stencil Cleaner, a unique product, perhaps the best on the market, but also the awesome KingArt Brush Basin, in which you can put your brushes while you work, clean them in the special plastic compartments and also leave them to dry in the proper place. This will definitely maximise the life of your brushes!
