Art Journal: the basics!

Do you find the idea of an Art Journal challenging but you don't know where to start? Already have an Art Journal but you are still looking for new inspiration? In any case, this article is for you!

In today's blog post, we'll share some simple tips and tricks on how to start an Art journal, some ideas on deciding what to include in your pages, and some answers to your basic art journaling questions!

Art journaling is a form of expression that includes various elements such as images, patterns, notes... It looks like a visual diary. This creative process helps you document thoughts, memories and feelings just like you would in a journal but incorporates various elements of art too.

It is the perfect way to express your personal thoughts and unleash your creativity at the same time!

The pages of an art journal usually have some or all of the following elements:

  • designs
  • writing or journaling
  • pictures
  • collage
  • sketch
  • color, lots of color
  • doodling
  • painting
  • mixed media
  • stamps

An art journal helps you to express yourself in your own way, freely, without overthinking it. It is your personal space where you can create whatever you want and use whatever materials you have!

The best thing about art journaling is that there are NO rules! Let your creativity and imagination free within the pages by combining various techniques and media...

There are no specific steps to follow when you start an art journal – just go on and start! There are no special rules or guidelines to follow when creating.

There is no wrong or right way. It also doesn't have to be perfect. Remember, art journaling is an outlet for personal expression so anything goes! Focus on the creative process and enjoy!

Here are some basic items you should have to get you started:

  • paper or a journal
    inks
    ephemera
    stamps
    die-cuttings
    colors (watercolors, acrylics, pencils...)
    fussy cut pads
    mists
    markers

  • You can decorate the pages of your art journal however you want! Add odd cut-out shapes, clippings from newspapers or magazines, old tickets, cut-out pictures, threads, sequins and buttons, stickers or photos...

There are no limits, challenge yourself and find new ways to use what you have.
