Art Journaling 101

Before we start, let me confide in you...

art journaling makes you an artist, whether you feel it or you think you don’t feel it… whether art and crafting seem an unexplored field to you…

By starting art journaling you realize that deep inside you, you’ve always been hiding an artist somehow, even if you haven’t revealed him/her yet.

And once you start and accept that, the way you perceive art and yourself will change...

you will feel proud of yourself!

So what is art journaling?

Art journaling actually looks like a diary where you write your thoughts, your feelings or your ideas, but you also make art at the same time. More simply, art journaling is the way to express your feelings through art.

What are the "benefits" of art journaling?

Art journaling is “carefree”. There is no right or wrong in art journaling! What you enjoy is the process of expressing yourself. So, the outcome is not that important. What is important is that each page you create says something about you, and about the moment you created it.

Second, art journaling allows you to overcome any fear you have of perfection, right/wrong, failure... Since there is no right or wrong since every "mistake" is an opportunity to learn something, then you create without fear, whatever comes your way, you feel free!!

For most of us, this is a shocking reveal!

Thirdly, by having an art journal you can create/express yourself every day. It's very convenient because it can actually be a paper pad and a pen, which you can carry in your bag and create wherever you are.

Finally, art journaling allows you, perhaps helps you, to mature as an artist but as a personality as well. And you will realize that immediately from the moment you decide to start. If you create often, freely, and without fear, evolution is inevitable.

And while it's addictive, it is also a "celebration" dedicated to our soul!

Materials

The list can be endless. It always depends on your style, the way you want to express yourself.

You will definitely need pens and markers, perhaps waterproof ones.

Acrylics and watercolors. And brushes of course!

You can also find some materials in your home, such as a kitchen sponge, paper roll, bottle caps, makeup brushes...think creatively and you will discover treasures!

And now let's move to the big question...what to express/create?

Here is the great part!
Each moment is priceless! The options are endless!

You can start by learning new techniques in your journal, learn how to draw, color, doodle or even practice calligraphy...
You can also start expressing your feelings, your thoughts.
You can use expression through art as a form of developing your self-awareness and discovering yourself...
In other words, you can use your art journal to collect quotes, ideas, travel ideas, dreams and also to keep a diary of your memories with photos.

And how do I start? from where?

The beginning might seem scary many times.

Draw a simple line at first, then draw another one...and little by little those lines might end up in a circle, and eventually something happens...

Add pages from a magazine, a photo, or a ticket. Use some color, doodle with your favorite pen, or copy your favorite poem...

If it helps, you can find lists of art journal prompts

or even get inspired by other people's creations on Pinterest.

So think about what art journaling could mean for you

and GET STARTED!

See you next Sunday!

Until then,

Artistic kisses!
